Ricky has now been in foster care for three and a half months and an update is long overdue...
Recommendations for prospective homes for Ricky from his foster family:
Someone that works from home, a stay-at-home parent or living arrangements that allow him to be in the house with outdoor access
Preferably no small children (under 10 years old)
No other male dogs in the home
NO CATS!
A large supply of stuffy toys
When Ricky is in the house with access to a yard via a dog door, he is the happiest dog in the world. However, once he is put outside and left to his own devices (no access to the house), he immediately becomes a determined escape artist. He isn't trying to escape to run free, he's trying to escape the fenced yard and air conditioned dog house to get into the house!
Yes, Ricky can be a challenge - he's strong-willed and we're guessing that for the first 5 years of his life he pretty much did as he pleased - but he has so much to offer. Ricky is really just an overgrown puppy - likes to chase his tail and, when he catches it, falls to the ground and rolls around on his back. Stuffy toys are always fun, even more so if you participate in keep-away. He is incredibly agile and light on his feet.
Less than a week ago Ricky and fellow foster dog, Hope, herded some grazing cattle into a tight bunch and kept them there by providing a "moving fence".

Looks like we have a water dog! Ricky swam around for several minutes, barking and splashing with a front paw every so often. I think he was chasing the small fish that live in the pond. Then it was time for more "laps" around the house - he dried off very quickly!

Ricky came into foster care on March 29, 2008. He is an intact 5 year old purebred Samoyed male. Arrangements will be made for him to be neutered and microchipped. We are awaiting copies of his veterinary records so that we may determine which, if any, vaccinations need to be updated. His left ear is flopped over and we were told by his owner that this is the result of an abscess in his ear that was drained twice.
He is a tall, lanky boy. He currently weighs approximately 50lbs. and could stand to put on a few more. He is not greatly motivated by food but doesn't appear to be a picky eater.
Ricky is a strong-willed boy that needs an experienced owner that will allow him to be in the home (preferably with access to the outdoors) when left alone.
Ricky has spent the first 5 years of his life as an only dog in his former home and is making adjustments to living amongst other dogs. We hope that he will be ready to go to his forever home in the next month or two.
