SCAustin Adoption Process and Guidelines

About SCAustin Rescue-SCAustin
Rescue came about, because of a need realized by two honorary
members, Joan & Jim Auld, of the Samoyed Club of Austin (SCAustin).
Presently, Anne Kikukawa, Reed Lewis and Debbie Buie have unselfishly
volunteered their time in leading the SCAustin's Rescue efforts.
The mission of SCAustin Rescue is
to place unwanted, abused and abandoned Samoyeds in loving homes
where they will be cherished family members for the duration of
their lives. Education for the new owner(s) is just one facet
of the adoption process. SCAustin Rescue continues to be
available, as needed, for the new owner(s). Many of the new
owner(s) continue to be involved with all the fun club activities,
and wonderful friendships are born.
Rescue Process-The
Samoyed Club of Austin, Inc. learns about Samoyeds needing rescue
through shelters, local animal control, groomers, veterinarians and
individuals. A dog is picked up and, if it's health record is
unknown, taken to a veterinarian to be brought up to date on shots.
The dog would also be spayed or neutered if not already done or as
soon as medically possible.
The next step is to evaluate the dog, then find foster care while
the placement process is initiated where the dog continues to be
evaluated and cared for. SCAustin screens all prospective owners to
ensure the dogs will have loving homes. Personality is matched to
prospective owners in an attempt to find permanent homes, and to
prevent returns. Sometimes an adoption just does not work out. If
that happens, SCAustin states in the adoption contract that the dog
must be returned to SCAustin foster care.
Fostering-The
number of relinquished or abandoned Samoyeds has created the need
for interim homes until the placement process can be completed. Many
rescued Samoyeds need medical care, recuperation and grooming before
they can be adopted.
The SCAustin has enlisted the aid of some generous volunteers who
agree to keep the rescued Samoyeds until owners can be matched with
them. The period in foster care can vary from a week to several
months and in some cases a year or more. Foster care provides
another important benefit- time to observe the dog and learn its
personality traits. This is valuable information that SCAustin uses
to match the dog with a prospective owner.

Donations-We
operate solely on the generosity of those that send us donations,
and our fundraisers. Last year alone we were able to help several
Samoyeds thanks to caring Samoyed owners and lovers and others who
just cared enough to help.
Donations help offset medical care, feeding, grooming and other
expenses associated with preparing a rescued Samoyed for adoption.
Another donation that everyone can make is that of time. SCAustin is
comprised of volunteers that dedicate their time to make this
process work. Duties range from answering email and phone calls to
setting up fundraisers.
Please take some time to think of how you can help save a Samoyed
and send a donation and/or a commitment of your time.
