SCAustin Adoption Process
Guidelines
Rescue Process-The Samoyed Club of Austin, Inc. (SCAustin) learns about Samoyeds
needing rescue through shelters, local animal control,
groomers, veterinarians and individuals. A dog is picked up
and, if it's health record is unknown, taken to a veterinarian
to be brought up to date on shots and tested for heartworm. If
not already done, the dog will be spayed or neutered as soon
as medically possible and microchipped.
The next step is to evaluate the dog, then find foster care
while the placement process is initiated where the dog
continues to be evaluated and cared for. SCAustin screens all
prospective owners to ensure the dogs will have loving homes.
Personality is matched to prospective owners in an attempt to
find permanent homes, and to prevent returns. Sometimes an
adoption just does not work out. If that happens, SCAustin
states in the adoption contract that the dog must be returned
to SCAustin foster care.
We are
contacted almost daily via email and telephone calls about our
rescues. In an effort to utilize our limited resources
efficiently, we allow only approved homes
(signed adoption application submitted and satisfactory home
visit concluded) to visit/meet available dogs. This policy is
also out of consideration to our foster homes. All of our
rescue dogs live in private residences until they are adopted
and we do not wish to ask our foster families to have a number
of strangers visiting their home.
SCAustin will not place a dog in a home where they will not
spend the majority of each day inside the home in a
climate-controlled environment. Samoyeds are notorious for
the digging, destruction, noise, and amazing escapes they are
capable of when left to their own devices. Even more so than
other breeds, Samoyeds need to be an interactive member of the
family on a daily basis. A bored Samoyed is a Samoyed looking
for trouble.
SCAustin strongly prefers to place dogs in home with securely
fenced environments. Many owners surrender their dogs to
shelters when the dog continually escapes from the home. Many
of the dogs found as strays are roaming the streets as a
result of less than adequate fencing.
SCAustin requests an adoption fee of $200.00 to help defray
our expenses (i.e. spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm tests,
heartworm preventative, microchip, heartworm treatments,
etc.). Ideally, the adoption fee and any additional
donation will replenish monies spent so that we can continue
to rescue dogs in need.
Our
referral assistance and rescue/adoption programs are funded
solely by donations and fundraising so your generosity is
greatly appreciated!
How to adopt a Samoyed through the Samoyed Club of Austin:
·
Complete and
sign our adoption application – this is a mandatory
requirement. The information you provide helps us to
determine what traits and personality you are looking for so
we can do our best to match you with the dog that will best
fit into your family and lifestyle.
·
Once your
application has been reviewed, our Rescue Coordinator will
contact you to discuss the information provided in your
application and currently available dogs. We will set up a
time for a SCAustin volunteer/representative to visit with you
in your home.
·
If approved,
we will arrange for you to come and meet the dog(s) of
interest to you. Our goal is to find the best possible match
for the dogs. If there is more than one approved applicant
for a particular dog, we will do our best to place the dog
with the home we feel is the best long term option for that
particular dog. If a match is not found with any of the
available dogs, we are happy to contact approved homes when a
suitable dog enters our rescue program.
·
Be sure to
maintain contact with us. It seems like for weeks there are
none, and then dogs appear at our doorstep in bunches. Please
be patient as we are a very small, all-volunteer organization,
easily distracted by things like fulltime jobs, families,
foster dogs and pets of our own that need our daily
attention. When you throw in the minor emergencies that
regularly plague us all (such as car problems and plumbing
leaks) it may take a few days before we can get back to you.
We are also often busy transporting incoming and outgoing
rescue dogs (many are coming/going outside of the greater
Austin area) and completing home visits with prospective
homes. So, if you don’t hear from us within a few days feel
free to contact us again at
scaustin@hotmail.com.
·
At the time of
adoption, you must review and sign our adoption contract and
pay the adoption fee.
